In short: web accessibility consists of allowing as many people as possible to perceive, understand and use a digital service. It concerns the content structure, keyboard, focus, contrasts, media, forms, errors and compatibility with assistive technologies.
An inaccessible site is not only difficult for a blind person. It can block a visually impaired, deaf, dyslexic person, limited in his movements, using an enlarged screen, navigating the keyboard or temporarily confronted with a restrictive situation.
Accessibility is therefore not limited to adding alternative texts after delivery. It is built in scoping, models, components, content and tests.
Define a level and a method
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, or WCAG, organize the criteria around perceptible, usable, understandable and robust content. Depending on the context of the project and its obligations, a national or sectoral reference may also apply.
The documentation WCAG of the W3C distinguishes the normative standard, explanations and techniques. These resources help you choose a control method rather than a simple browser extension.
For specific legal obligations, the scope and the expected declaration must be validated with the competent interlocutors. An agency can integrate and audit technical requirements; it must not invent regulatory compliance.
Build an HTML structure that carries meaning
Use the elements according to their function: header, navigation, main content, sections, titles, lists, buttons and links. An H1 describes the main subject; the following levels follow a logical hierarchy without being chosen for their visual size.
Links announce a destination. The buttons trigger an action. A table is used for tabular data, not for layout. This semantic offers more reliable navigation for screen readers and makes the document more robust for engines.
ARIA can complete a component when native HTML is not enough. It does not correct a button built like a non-interactive div and requires the announced states to be properly managed.
Guarantee a complete keyboard route
All actions must be reachable and usable without a mouse: navigation, mobile menu, accordions, carousels, forms, modals and closing messages. The tabulation order follows the visual and logical order.
The focus remains visible with sufficient contrast. It is not masked by a fixed header or banner. When a modal opens, the focus enters it predictably, remains in the useful context and then returns to the trigger at closing.
Also test the absence of a trap: the user must always be able to continue or leave a component.
Choose colors and contrasts from the model
An elegant gray on a dark background can become unreadable. Check text contrasts, functional icons, important borders, and focus states in all variants. Never convey information only by color.
An error field can use red, but it must also display a message and a programmatic relationship. A chart can combine colors, patterns and labels. Overscrew states should not be the only way to discover an action, especially on a touch screen.
Write useful image alternatives
The alternative text depends on the function. A decorative image receives an empty alt in order to be ignored. An informative photo describes what helps to understand the context. A linked logo can bear the name of the destination. A complex capture may require an explanation in the adjacent text.
Avoid "image of" and keyword lists. If information already appears immediately in the caption, do not repeat it mechanically. The goal is to offer an equivalent experience, not to describe every visual detail.
Design forms that explain errors
Each field has a visible and correctly associated label. Important instructions appear before entering. The expected formats and required fields are understandable without depending on a placeholder that disappears.
After sending, the errors are summarized and linked to the fields concerned. The focus moves usefully, the valid values are kept and the message explains how to correct. A message of success is announced and does not leave the form in an ambiguous state.
When authentication is necessary, avoid unnecessary cognitive obstacles and allow password managers. The new requirements of WCAG 2.2 reinforce in particular the unmasked focus, the minimum size of certain targets, redundant input and accessible authentication.
Make content understandable
Use specific vocabulary, develop acronyms and place the main answer early. Short paragraphs, lists and descriptive subtitles facilitate reading without infantilizing the subject.
Navigation links keep the same name and order when their function does not change. Help and contact information remain easy to find. The automatic movement can be stopped, and the animation reduction system preference is respected.
Process audio, video and documents
An informative video requires synchronized subtitles; depending on the content, a transcription and audio description may be required. The player's controls are key-accessible and correctly named.
An important PDF is part of the course and must be verified. When content can be published directly in HTML, this option often facilitates responsive reading, navigation and updating.
Test with several methods
Automatic tools detect some of the errors: absent alt, contrast, missing wording or invalid attribute. They do not determine if an alternative text is relevant, if the reading order makes sense or if an error is understandable.
The acceptance testing therefore combines:
-
automatic analysis on several templates;
-
complete keyboard route;
-
zoom and enlargement of the text;
-
verification of representative theme and screen sizes;
-
test with screen reader on critical journeys;
-
user tests when the scope allows.
A mobile site creation first offers a good framework for integrating these controls. The web performance completes the work: an accessible interface must also remain responsive and stable.
Maintain accessibility after launch
An accessible component can be degraded by new content, third-party widget, or color change. Add automatic rules to tests, document components, and include accessibility in editorial validation.
Track user feedback and fix blockages with a priority that is proportional to their impact. A declaration never replaces the actual ability to use the service.
BlackStone Digital designs custom websites by integrating structure, keyboard, contrast, responsive and form messages. To evaluate a specific route, tell us the pages and actions concerned.
